GARAPAN Elementary School did not end the opening day of the 2020 Public School System Elementary Basketball empty-handed on Saturday as the Mallards collected two easy wins in as many games.

GES’s first opponent was San Vicente Elementary School.

Both teams struggled at first and made several attempts to score but to no avail. It was not until after five minutes of play when GES finally broke the silence thanks to Jaime Agbuya’s clutch shot at the free throw line. After a few moments of back and forth action, Erica Zanduata joined the scoreboard with a bucket of her own as GES ended the first half with a 4-0 lead.

But SVES was not going down without a fight as the Canaries picked up the pace on the defensive end and rewarded themselves with an open shot courtesy of Shaenna Lizama. However, they were nowhere to be seen for the remainder of the game due to the defensive efforts of GES.

The Mallards’ teamwork brought the ball down and found Elisa Yleisa and then Chelsea Sonoda open for a shot. GES won, 8-2.

GES’s next “victim” was William S. Reyes Elementary School.

Yleisa found her stroke early in the game, sinking three consecutive buckets before cooling down. However, her teammates kept the fuel burning as they spread the gap even further during the second half.

Mary Wang, Paula Surima and Divine Baxter made it to the scoreboard by contributing a bucket apiece while Chelsea Sonoda ended the game with a bang with a three-pointer. GES won in a blowout, 16-0.

San Vicente Elementary School, for its part, managed to win a game by defeating Oleai Elementary School in a close battle, 14-12.
