AS of Thursday, the Saipan Higher Education Financial Assistance had received 1,344 applications for the spring semester.

SHEFA has already approved 629 applications, program administrator Merissa Rasa said, adding that she is expecting more applications today, Friday, which is the deadline for the submission of supporting documents.

There are 83 applications from Northern Marianas Trades Institute students, she added.

SHEFA has denied 75 applications. An application is denied if the application package is incomplete; the applicant has already met the maximum award duration; or a student did not maintain the 2.5 Cumulative Grade Point Average requirement.

Rasa said 640 applications are still pending.

Of the 1,344 applicants, 242 are new; 1,026 ongoing; and 76, returning.

Rasa said 837 are pursuing their studies on island; 388 will study off-island; and 119 have signed up for online courses.

The applicants consist of 556 freshmen; 320 sophomores; 228 juniors; 110 graduate students; and 28 advanced/doctorate/juris doctorate students.

“We still have enough funding to cover this year,” Rasa told the SHEFA board on Thursday.

SHEFA’s main funding source is the collection of the island’s annual poker license fees.
