A FORMER instructor of Northern Marianas College, Dr. William “Bill” Bingham, 82, died on Oct. 5, 2020 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Dr. Bingham was born in New York to a Catholic family on Dec. 2, 1937.  He received his doctor of philosophy in literature degree from New Mexico State University in the 1960s.  A devoted Catholic, he cared for the people in need and gave love to everybody who crossed his path.

A dedicated and long-time educator, Dr. Bingham taught philosophy, literature and speech, among other courses, at NMC from 1990 to 2004.  He also taught in Kauai, Hawaii, Key West, Florida, New Mexico, American Samoa, South Korea, Monaco and Algeria.

After his retirement from NMC in 2004, he moved to Honolulu, Hawaii to join his wife, where he taught part-time at the University of Hawaii Kapiolani Community College and Hawaii Pacific University.

His wit, humor and character were loved by all students and colleagues.  Students in his classes at NMC will recall that he recounted the story of the Titanic in many of his classes.

A fine scholar, novelist and poet, Dr. Bingham always maintained a spiritual orientation.  He was always positive and upbeat.  He published several books under the pen name of “Howling Wolf” including “Rainy Day Women,” “Kafka in Samadhi: Four Stores,” “Deep Sleep,” “The Martian Visitors: Stories and Sketches,” “African Moon: Poem,” and several collections of poems and essays that he wrote between 1955 and 2000.

Dr. Bingham is survived by his beloved wife, Hui Bingham, his sisters, Mary Falco and Eleanor Bandall, and his younger brother Robert Bingham.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Operation Smile, a nonprofit medical service organization, in his memory.

Dr. Bingham will be missed by all.  Dr. Bingham, rest in peace! May God be with you.

The writer, who now resides in Dallas Texas, is one of Dr. Bingham’s former NMC students.
