THE Northern Marianas Badminton Association is aiming to expand the sport to the outdoors with the introduction of AirBadminton to the youth on Wednesday during the second Shuttle Time event at the Oleai Sports Complex.

With the Covid-19 protocols still in effect, now seems to be the perfect time to play badminton outside on the grass, the sand or on concrete.

The nine young players who participated in the event on Saturday learned warm-up drills and the basics of the sport from the CNMI national team members.

"The national players will be our future teachers and trainers," said NMBA official Cristy Villaflor.

The national team members and young players started off with stretches and later moved to footwork, proper handling of the racket, the movement of the AirShuttle and serving.

“Kids love to go outdoors and play so AirBadminton is a perfect fit for them,” said CNMI national team member Janelle Pangilinan. “By introducing AirBadminton to the young players, we are hoping to encourage more people to try our sport. AirBadminton is more accessible to the community.”

NMBA president Merlie Tolentino, for her part, thanked Badminton Oceania and the Badminton World Federation “for providing us with the resources to hold Shuttle Time and AirBadminton sessions. We look forward to our continued partnership with them, as NMBA works on building a sustainable program for our students and our youth by providing them with activities that promote health and wellness.”
