CALVIN Yamagishi notched the Marianas Golf Association's October Ace of the Month title by edging Gus Palacios on Saturday at the Kingfisher Golf Links.

Twenty-five MGA members and five guests fought for this month's title but it was the battle between Yamagishi and Palacios that headlined the tournament.

Yamagishi played well in the front nine, covering the distance and finishing with precision in the green to stay ahead of the competition with a gross score of 41. Although the back nine proved to be the tougher part of the course, Yamagishi kept his head up and finished with a gross of 45. Covered by a handicap of 16, his gross total of 86 was reduced to a net score of 70.

Gus Palacios was also out for blood. He closed the front nine with a gross of 48 and improved his score in the back nine to 46 for a total of 94. Thanks to his handicap of 24, his net score was 70. He and Yamagishi tied for first place, but Yamagishi had the edge in the scorecard playoff so Palacios had to settle for second place.

The actual star of the tournament was Joey Dela Cruz who led the pack with a net score of 69, but he had won the previous month’s tournament so the October title went to Yamagishi.

For the Closest to the Pin side event, Chris Groves was tops at hole #6; John Terlaje, hole #8; Dung Tenorio, hole #11; and Paul Kaipat, hole #15.

MGA also welcomed its newest member, Jerry Lin, and guests: Larry Philip, Peter Mendiola, Mr. PC, John Cepeda, and Sylvester Javier.

MGA's current golf season runs from May 2020 to April 2021. The group holds a monthly ace tournament and welcomes interested golfers to join MGA. All they need to do is reach out to a current MGA member for more details. A new member's annual fee is $40 while a returning member pays $30. The one-time annual fee also gets you an MGA polo shirt and a hat.
