For his “Cool Summer Mojito,” Ronnie Guevarra of Coral Ocean Point was declared the winner and was awarded a trophy, a cellphone, $150 and gift certificates. Guevarra was also named Best in Shooter Drinks and Best in Showmanship, which came with another trophy, $25 cash and gift certificates.

Guevarra last year bested six other contestants with his “Beat the Heat” concoction. He has also won the GIG’s Bar Master Cocktail Competition and No Fear to Flair in 2006, the Bravo Barista Cocktail Competition in March 2007, the Bravo Barista Saipan and Guam Cocktail Competition in 2007 and the Taste of the Marianas Skirting Competition in 2009. Moreover, he represented Guam and the CNMI in the international Bravo Barista Cocktail Competition in Venice, Italy in Sept. 2007.

Alvin Palma from Saipan World Resort is this year’s first runner up and the winner of the Best in Taste Award for his “World Mojito.” He received a trophy, $75 cash and gift certificates.

Jay Santos of Zebra Bar was second runner up for his “Mellon Mojito.” He won a trophy, $25 cash and gift certificates and another trophy and gift for Best in Props and Costume.

Hyatt Regency Saipan’s Rizalina Elchico was third runner up for her “Green Shadow” drink.

Derol Tudela from the Hyatt Regency, Mike Benavente from GIG Discotheque and Monico Usi from Joe’s Steakhouse Bar & Grill were the other contestants.

The participants were not allowed to wear any uniform or company logos and were not allowed to use concocted ingredients such as ice cream and chocolate syrup. Each had five minutes to perform and prepare their drinks and they had to use Bacardi Superior only as the main or base ingredient.

The contestants were judged based on the following criteria: 20 percent for originality, 25 percent for taste, 40 percent for showmanship, 5 percent for neatness, and 10 percent for audience impact.

NMI Bartenders Association president and event coordinator Lito Espino thanked all the participants and their respective establishments as well as the sponsors and everyone else who helped make this year’s event another success.

The judges were Annamae Adaza, manager of Lueng Fung Enterprises and president of the United Filipino Organization; Soccoro Hulinganga, assistant food & beverage manager of Fiesta Resort & Spa; Elvira Yagi, former owner of Restaurant & Bar and now owner of Yuichiro Printing; and William Retardo, executive chef of Marianas Resort & Spa.

The sponsors were the Marianas Visitors Authority, Marpac, Duty Free Shop Galleria, Tan Siu Lin Foundation, IT&E, Coca-Cola, United Filipino Organization, System 4 You Total Cosmetic, Armatech Engineering Works and Mariana Resort & Spa.
