ON Sept. 19, 2021, Saipan Southern High School’s Manta Ray Battalion participated in the International Coastal Cleanup — their first cleanup event of the school year.
The cadets were instructed to assemble at San Antonio Beach before 7:30 a.m. in order for the leaders and instructors to brief them about the areas that needed to be cleaned.
In total, there were 83 cadets and two instructors. The cadets were split into two groups: group 1 was assigned to clean up the south side of the beach while group 2 cleaned up the north side.
As they were cleaning up, leaders recorded the types of litter being collected. These included plastics, cigarette butts, glass bottles, among other things.
The Manta Ray Battalion cadets started cleaning up at 8 a.m. and they completed their task at around 9:30 a.m. Once they regrouped, they gathered all the trash bags that needed to be disposed of.
The Manta Ray cadets are proud that they participated in the International Coastal Cleanup. Removing litter will not only beautify our beaches but will also help conserve them.
