RETIRED CNMI Chief Justice Jose S. Dela Cruz’s new book, “The Fundamental Issues Affecting the Northern Mariana Islands,” was launched Saturday as part of the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library’s 30th anniversary celebration.

Dela Cruz signed copies of his book, which he said also mentioned the casino industry on Saipan. “I don’t envy the leaders of the CNMI, in terms of trying to address what to do with the casino,” he added, referring to the beleaguered casino investor, Imperial Pacific International.

“I mentioned [the casino in the book] hopefully, to stir up discussion [so] our leaders will look into these issues, and can start rectifying them, and start thinking of other possible industries that are a good fit for the CNMI. So that we can start thinking of our economy, and what kind of industry…would be good for the islands and would not be taxing on our infrastructure...and promote a good quality of life for the islands….  Right now, we only have one industry, and it’s limping,” Dela Cruz added referring to the tourism industry.

His first book about the CNMI, published in 2010, is titled, “From Colonialism to Self-Government: The Northern Marianas Experience.”

Copies of this and his second book are available at JKPL.

In 2017, Dela Cruz published his first novel, “Lorenzo’s Mind,” which is about a personal injury attorney who fears he is losing his mind. Copies are available on
