Rep. Blas Jonathan Tenorio Attao, a candidate for governor in the 2026 Commonwealth election, has expressed a welcoming stance as more contenders step forward in the coming race.

On Wednesday, Attao issued a statement in response to former Senate Floor Leader Vinnie Vinson Flores Sablan’s letter of intent to seek the Republican nomination for governor. In his remarks, Attao congratulated Sablan and underscored the sense of responsibility and civic purpose that comes with public office. He also shared his respect for all who commit to serving the community.

“I would like to extend my congratulations to Vinnie Sablan on his announcement to seek the Republican nomination for Governor in the upcoming 2026 General Election,” said Attao.

“Running for public office is a serious and honorable undertaking—one rooted in the shared desire to improve the lives of our people and strengthen the future of our Commonwealth. I have the utmost respect for anyone who steps forward to seek election and serve our community. My running mate, Edmund Villagomez, and I welcome an open, civil campaign, and we wish Vinnie well on his effort to secure the Republican party’s nomination.”

He added, “We remain focused on listening to the community, addressing its needs, and working toward a stronger, more sustainable future. We are committed to continuing our service as legislators and, if given the privilege by the people, as the next Governor and Lt. Governor of the Commonwealth.”

Running as an independent candidate with Speaker Villagomez, Attao said the team remains focused on community engagement, addressing the needs of residents, and working towards long-term goals for the Commonwealth.

Meanwhile, although Lt. Gov. Dennis James Mendiola has yet to officially submit a letter of intent, he is widely regarded as Sablan’s likely running mate. With strong candidates emerging, the 2026 gubernatorial race is shaping up to be an open and active contest, marked by candidates’ stated commitment to serve the Commonwealth and its people.
