SENATOR Paul A. Manglona is reaching out to the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. for an update on the implementation of special water rates for local farmers and ranchers.

In his letter to CUC Executive Director Gary Camacho last week, Manglona said Public Law 13-40 establishes special water rates for local commercial farmers and ranchers.

Authored by then-Sen. Jose Dela Cruz, and enacted in December 2002, the law sets a water rate of 25 cents per 1,000 gallons in areas where 24-hour water is available; and a flat rate of $25 per month in areas where 24-hour water is not available.

Manglona said the law was enacted "in an effort to support the long-standing traditions of sustainable living [of] people who live off the land and sea."

He is requesting Camacho to provide him an updated status report regarding the implementation of the special rates in each senatorial district.

He also asked the executive director to "kindly include any issues of concern that have [arisen] or challenges dealt with by your office to comply with this law."

"It is my hope that we may begin the discussion of these special rates to continue assisting our local farmers and ranchers especially during these trying times," Manglona told Camacho.
