THERE have been talks that Speaker Edmund S. Villagomez, an independent, will be the running mate of the Democratic candidate for governor, Rep. Tina Sablan, in next year’s election.

But Villagomez on Saturday said, “There’s no confirmation.”

“There are currently rumors/talks. But there are different talks in the community especially when an election is coming up and getting closer — different talks are going around,” he added.

Asked if he would agree to be Sablan’s running mate, Villagomez said: “That’s something that I have to consult with my family, my [campaign] committee, and…the community.”

“I’ve been in this line of work long enough, and every time I take on a new role, I try to step back and understand the responsibility and the duties, and the obligations that come with taking on that responsibility. Those are the things that I have to sit down and take all in before I make any kind of decision,” said the speaker who has been a House member since January 2010.

Variety learned that the NMI Democratic Party will announce Sablan’s running mate this week, before Thanksgiving.

Also running for governor in 2022 are the Republican incumbent, Ralph DLG Torres, and his lt. governor, Arnold I. Palacios, an independent candidate.
