EACH year on Memorial Day we commemorate our fallen heroes who served to hold our flag high. On Saipan, this year’s event took place on May 31, 2021, at 9 a.m. at the CNMI Veterans Cemetery in Marpi.
As part of the Covid-19 protocols, a temperature screening was carried out by the Saipan Southern High School’s Manta Ray Battalion cadets near the entrance of the cemetery.
To officially start the ceremony, the battalion’s Color Guard presented the U.S. and CNMI flags as the national and CNMI anthems were played. Afterward, the Color Guard posted the colors and the ceremony began as scheduled.
During the ceremony, the cadets distributed copies of the program and directed officials, military families and other community members to their seats.
In addition, the cadets escorted the military families and military service members as they placed flowers on the gravestones.
The laying of the wreath ceremony included Gov. Ralph DLG Torres, Lt. Gov. Arnold I. Palacios, U.S. Congressman Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan, Saipan Mayor David M. Apatang, military service members, veteran, their families, and other distinguished guests.
After the laying of the wreath, the ceremony was concluded by the Manta Ray Battalion Color Guard retiring the colors.
Despite the rainy and breezy weather, the cadets supported the event successfully.
On Memorial Day, it is important to recognize and reflect on the memory of the brave heroes in the armed services who have served us and our nation.
