STUDENTS from Sinapalo Elementary School and Rota High School brought home cash for winning an art competition conducted by the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs on Rota.

The event was part of the Child Abuse and Neglect and Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month commemoration spearheaded by the Division of Youth Services.

Bernice Cayabyab, Grade 2 student at Sinapalo Elementary School, topped the Grades 1 to 3 category in which the theme of entries was Child Abuse and Neglect Awareness.

Cayabyab won $50.

Taking  second place and the $30 cash prize was Joe Sonny M. Charfauros, Grade 1 student at Sinapalo Elementary School. The third prize of $20 went to Lokela Taisacan, Grade 3 at Sinapalo Elementary School.

In the Grades 4 to 6 category, which also featured Child Abuse and Neglect-themed entries, Sayema Sidur, Grade 5 at Sinapalo Elementary School won first place and $50 cash.

Yusuf Fakir, Grade 4 of Sinapalo Elementary School, placed second and brought home $30 while Dwayne Maratita II, Grade 5 at Sinapalo Elementary School won the $20 third prize.

In the Grades 7 to 8 category, in which entries depicted the theme of Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention, Sayera Sidur, Grade 8 at Rota High School, topped the contest and won $60.

Danica Malaborbor, Grade 7 at Rota High School, won the $40 second prize while Leana Agbayani, Grade 8 at Rota High School, received the $25 third prize.

In the Grades 9 to 12 category, Maria Claassens, Grade 12 at Rota High School, won first place and $80.

Angela Guiang, Grade 11 at Rota High School, placed second and won $60 while Éclair Ladao, Grade 9 at Rota High School, was third and received $35.

DCCA-Rota Division of Sports, Arts Council, Historic Preservation Office and the 18th Rota Municipal Council staffers assisted in the preparation for the art competition.

Fifty-eight drawings were submitted by contestants from Sinapalo Elementary School, Grace Christian Academy and Dr. Rita Hocog Inos Jr. & Sr. High School.

The judges were DCCA Arts Council staffer Lucille Ayuyu, HPO staffer Antonelli Rosario and Rota Mayor’s Office staffer Edwin Orilla.

The donors for the drawing competition were the Rota Mayor’s Office and the Northern Marianas Coalition Against Domestic & Sexual Violence.

The awards ceremony will be held on May 14, at 6 p.m., at the Sinapalo Youth Center.
