MARTIN Hess and Addalee Taflinger finished first in the 10K distance race of their respective divisions on day 1 of the 2nd Annual Run Saipan Trinity event at the Beach Road pathway on Saturday morning.

Hess, who is more into marathons than short distance races, was visiting to Saipan for two weeks so he decided to take on the Trinity challenge. He placed first overall with a time of 38:42.

In second place was Sildrey Veloria who clocked 41:01 followed by Victor Nash Santos in third at 41:45.

Hess said he was on island with his wife, who was here to work on her PhD in language study and see old friends.

“Today was quite hard — I still have a problem with the humidity,” he said, referring to the 10K race on Saturday.

“The flat track was most of the challenge,” he added. Nonetheless, Hess gained the lead after covering about 2K of the race course.

Women’s division

In the women’s division, Addalee Taflinger came in first at 52:12. Shawna Brennfleck with a time of 52:52 was second followed by Ann Bang in third at 53:57.

“I’ve never ran in a Trinity before, so I enjoyed running in a different kind of race,” Taflinger told Variety.

She said it was only her second 10K distance.

“I like 5K more because it is shorter but the 10K is a really different race,” she added. “Last year my mom and dad joined and said it was really run so I really wanted to do it.”

To prepare for the uphill Mt. Tapochao race on Day 2 of the Trinity race, Taflinger said, “I’m just going to rest and drink a lot of water today.”
