Runners compete in the 1,600m distance during the NMA Track & Field Open Meet last month at the Oleai Sports Complex.

THE second Northern Marianas Athletic Track & Field Open Meet will be held on July 24 at 4 p.m. at the Oleai Sports Complex

“With the cancellation  and postponement of many regional championship events, we have to find a way to get our athletes back to competition,” NMA secretary general Robin Sapong said.

He said local track & field meets help identify talented young athletes. “We also encourage them to try a variety of events,” he added.

To keep local events manageable for participants and supporters, Sapong they decided to have a short  schedule of events but with a variety of disciplines.

He said they also aim to promote master athletes by holding events for them.

These events have likewise allowed NMA to recruit more volunteers, he added.

“We are blessed to be able to organize events for our athletes and community as some other areas still have restrictions in place due to the Covid-19 protocols,” Sapong said.

NMA plans to host another event in August after the Tokyo Olympics.
