IN the past five weeks with the Southwestern Community College Spartans golf team, Sebastian Camacho of Saipan said they have already played three events, winning two of them.
At the Simpson Invitational in Indiana, Iowa on Sept. 22, Southern CC's Stetson McIlravy finished overall first place with a net score of 73 .
Right behind him was teammate Robin Persson who shot 74 while Camacho placed fifth with a net score of 75 as Southwestern CC topped the team competition.
Camacho's best performance was on hole #12. “I had blocked a shot off the tee right into the rough and, from under a couple trees, I managed to get the ball within 15ft of the hole from nearly 150 yards out and I made the putt for birdie,” he said.
Camacho added, “I won’t ever take our golf courses back home [on Saipan] for granted because of our landscape and weather. The courses here [in the states] are really challenging if all aspects of your game aren’t well rounded. Especially because the courses here aren’t always well kept or ideal….”
Southwestern Community College will soon compete in the two-day Kansas City Cup, the three-day Northwest Iowa Collegiate Showcase and the three-day NJCAA Division II Men's National Championship Preview.
