(TSLF) —  The Tan Siu Lin Foundation has donated $2,250 to the Saipan Fishermen’s Association for prizes for the wahoo category in this weekend’s 37th Saipan International Fishing Tournament.

SFA president Tony Scragg received the donation in a brief turnover ceremony last June 24 at the TSLF Foundation office in Garapan and was joined in the presentation by other SFA officials.

“We would like to thank the Tan Siu Lin Foundation and TanHoldings for their generosity. We’re on our 37th year and SFA is able to continue this competition despite the Covid-19 pandemic because of committed sponsors like the TSL Foundation and TanHoldings. They’ve been with us for many years and we hope to continue the partnership,” Scragg said.

The TSL Foundation is one of the four category sponsors in the July 10 and 11 event. Besides the mahi competition, the more than 60 entries from Saipan, Rota, Tinian, and Guam will be battling for bragging rights and prizes in the yellow fin, mahi, and skip jack categories. Boat captains and anglers will also vie for the grand prize (heaviest single catch marlin). K-Fisher won the grand prize last year with its 290-lb marlin, while Reyisa prevailed in the wahoo category with its 49.8-lb catch. MV Tivina and Santa Soledad, meanwhile, topped the mahi (11.7 lbs) and skipjack (11.5 lbs) divisions, respectively.

TSL Foundation executive director Merlie Tolentino wishes all the participants in the tournament good luck and a safe sail in their bid to reel in a prized catch this weekend.

MINA marine debris contest

The TSL Foundation has also partnered with the Mariana Islands Nature Alliance for MINA’s marine debris contest in this weekend’s fishing tournament.

The TSL Foundation donated $1,500 to MINA for the raffle prizes for the contest, which encourages fishing tournament participants to bring in any piece of marine debris on their way out of the water. MINA’s Tasi Watch Rangers will also conduct outreach and education activities on how to protect our waters and marine life at the Smiling Cove Marina this weekend.
