Today, August 4th, is International Beer Day, and Variety celebrated early by visiting the Beer-muda Triangle, better known as Palm Street in Garapan, where some of the top bars on island set up shop to sell their hops. While Variety was at Godfather’s, manager Lou Montemayor said she’ll make you an offer you can’t refuse.
You might say Lourdes Montemayor is something of a consigliere at Godfather’s, the bar she manages along Palm Street in Garapan.
Montemayor says that from 4 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. draft beers go from $7 a mug to $4.99. Godfather’s has taps on taps on taps of draft beers according to Montemayor. Look for Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Fat Tire, Pacifico, Downtown Brown, and Breaking Bud IPA.
As for Montemayor, she’s a fan of draft Blue Moon, which she says is fruity and smooth.
She also adds that the Godfather’s pizza will have you kissing the ring. As bar regulars know, Gods has a wide variety of food on their menu, but the pizza really is the Don Corleone of the establishment.
Just like the beer promo, the pizzas go on special from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. as well–an 18-inch pepperoni pizza drops in price from $19 to $16, while a cheese pizza goes from $17 to $14, according to Montemayor.
“We’re the party place and everybody is like family,” Monetemayor says. “So come and join us. Enjoy the cool beer that we have.”
Just don’t bother her on the day of her daughter’s wedding. Godfather’s Bar bagged the silver award for Best Beer Selection in the recent Best of the Marianas, while Naked Fish Bar and Grill grabbed the gold award.
Across the street at Safehouse, Catherine Blas, Budz Camacho, and the rest of the crew are ready to quench your thirst.
Catherine Blas, left, Budz Camacho, right, and the drinks customers enjoy at Safehouse.
If you ask Camacho what’s the bida, he’ll tell you the bida lives at Safehouse.
“It’s crazy. A lot of people come here. It’s not the same every weekend,” Camacho says. “The vibes are good here.”
Blas says that the beer and drink selection is what draws their customers, and of course she says this standing in front of a cooler that looks like a treasure chest of refreshing beverages.
Remember to tip your bartenders double on International Beer Day
Blas adds that Safehouse is where America’s Day Beergins, because products from The Guam Brewery and Carabao Brewing are hot sellers.
In particular, Nana’s Pie, a Guam Brewery product, is cherry like Aunty Mary, according to Blas. She says she’s not even a big beer drinker, but it’s still one she would enjoy.
As for Camacho, he says Niyok Punch, a Carabao Brewing product, is popular as well. Safehouse Bar was the bronze winner for Best Beer Selection in the 2023 Best of the Marianas.
According to Camacho, Hop Jutusu and Hafa Adai hard seltzers from Guam Brewery and Rogue Ale’s Batsquatch are in high demand as well. White Claws draw all the applause also, Camacho says.
Remember to enjoy International Beer Day responsibly–drive sober or get pulled over.
