Community, visitors join Marianas Tourism Month cleanups

(MVA) — Community members of The Marianas and newly appointed Marianas Goodwill Ambassador SkySyllabus turned out bright and early in the past week for the Marianas Tourism Month Cleanup.

The four-member J-pop group, along with representatives of Japanese Society of the Northern Mariana Islands, Japan Saipan Travel Association, Northern Marianas Dive Operators Association, Saipan Magalahi Eagles Club, and Crowne Plaza Resort Saipan joined the Marianas Visitors Authority on Saturday, May 24, at Makaka Beach in the Garapan tourist district for a sweep of the beach. Dividing into two groups, the 70+ volunteers made quick work of the cleanup from Grandvrio Resort Saipan to Crowne Plaza Resort. The collective effort resulted in over 50 lbs. of trash, including a few oddities such as tires, PVC pipes, and fishing gear.

On May 28, MVA led the charge at giving a newly reopened ocean-fed swimming hole in Tinian a touch up. MVA was joined at the site by representatives of the Department of Public Works, Tinian Mayor’s Office, and MVA members JC Café and Good Tour. The natural pool was a popular recreational site for U.S. military personnel during World War II.

“A big si Yu’us ma’ase, olomwaay, and thank you to our community volunteers, our industry partners, our new Marianas Goodwill Ambassador SkySyllabus, and even our staff’s family members for turning out to make tourism their business with this week’s cleanups,” said MVA Managing Director Jamika R. Taijeron. “Let us all continue to keep our islands clean and green for both residents and visitors to enjoy.”

The other activities for Marianas Tourism Month were the Taste of The Marianas International Food Festival, tourism trivia with prizes on participating radio stations, and more.
