HWANG Hee Jung, who is wanted on multiple charges — including possession of a stolen firearm, possession of a controlled substance, violation of firearm identification card requirements, and unlawful possession of ammunition — was arrested by the Department of Public Safety early Friday morning.
DPS had issued a wanted notice for Hwang on Sept. 19.
According to DPS Public Information Officer Fred Sato, Hwang was apprehended at about 3 a.m. near the 99 Cent store in Garapan.
Hwang, 43, appeared in custody before Superior Court Judge Joseph N. Camacho for a bail hearing Friday morning. He was represented by attorney Joaquin DLG Torres, while Chief Prosecutor Chester Hinds represented the government and asked the court to maintain bail.
Judge Camacho granted the request and imposed a $100,000 cash bail for Hwang’s release. He remanded Hwang to the custody of the Department of Corrections and ordered him to return to court for a preliminary hearing on Oct. 1 at 10 a.m. and an arraignment at 9 a.m.
This case is separate from an earlier criminal matter in which Hwang was accused of kidnapping and assaulting a tour guide.
Previously, Hwang was arrested and charged in connection with the alleged kidnapping and assault of tour guide Jijing “Jimmy” Borja on Aug. 25. Borja told police he was assaulted and abducted by Hwang and two other suspects: Peter Deleon Guerrero, 57, also known as “Dragon” or “Paduna,” and Yichuan Bai. Deleon Guerrero and Bai remain in custody.
In that case, CR-25-0092, Hwang posted $25,000 bail for his release.
According to the complaint in DPS case 25-006884, a multi-agency task force executed a search warrant at Hwang’s two-story residence in San Roque on Sept. 4 for any electronic recording or storage devices.
During the search, police investigators discovered a black Sig Sauer P229 firearm underneath one of the beds. They also found a black-and-gray container with an ammunition box containing 42 rounds of 9×19 ammunition, as well as a blue glass pipe containing a white substance.
After verifying the firearm’s serial number, police confirmed that it had been reported stolen in 2022. The substance in the glass pipe also tested positive for methamphetamine, investigators said.
