THE reason I never voted after leaving Saipan is that I see how politics can affect families in general. I never planned to take on the problems of democracy, but it was a required class in high school.
In my case, I accidentally took a U.S. civics journalism class because I wasn’t paying attention when selecting my courses. By the time I realized, it was too late to change.
Because my father pushed me not to drop the class, I eventually considered my dream job in America as a U.S.-CNMI journalist — even though I hate politics — because politics can destroy families.
I don’t care whether my family members are Republican or Democrat, but don’t tell me to vote for Republicans when I choose to be a conservative Democrat. Still, just because someone is a Republican will never change my view that they are my Carolinian brother or sister, no matter how they criticize me for being a conservative Democrat.
My father was a loyal Republican.
It’s absurd how Democrats label themselves today — blue Democrats, progressive Democrats, Gen Z Democrats, Baby Boomer Democrats — it’s all ridiculous. And the same goes for Republicans: millennials, conservatives, “Barbie doll” Republicans, Christian Republicans, drunken master Republicans, or MAGA conman Republicans.
If anyone wants to be a mean Republican or a mean Democrat to me, fine, bring it on — but it will not change anything. You are still my Carolinian brother or sister, no matter how you judge me.
As a U.S.-CNMI journalist, I want no part of what party establishments call themselves. What I want to ask both Democrats and Republicans is this: What happened to normal America — the good manners and politeness we used to have? Since when did we become so foolish? Is it because of money and greed?
Can you believe the crazy things happening today? Are we really going to keep up the craziness in Washington, D.C., or on Capitol Hill?
Was it my idea to let Democrats or Republicans endanger my wife for CEOs’ opioid profits? The latest election winners are Democrats, so I cannot complain — but I pray that my wife comes home safely soon.
I will not let Democrats or Republicans abuse my wife or destroy my marriage. I don’t want to go into details, but one day I visited my wife at a psychiatric clinic in Oregon and saw blood on her hospital clothes and face. I believe she was abused. I yelled in the waiting area and demanded that the staff move my wife.
I took one of three possible culprits to the Multnomah County Family Court to obtain visiting rights, but they lied to the judge. This is a total wrongdoing.
Sincerely,
JOAQUIN O. ROMOLOR
Washington, D.C.
