Tower for Humanity: A 9/11-Themed Project to Break Ground at the Agana Shopping Center

Hagatna, Guam — The Aydlett Brothers will soon break ground on their next toy timber construction project. The Tower for Humanity is back and the brothers will begin stacking blocks on a 9/11-themed construction in the Agana Shopping Center’s (ASC) Center Court on Saturday, August 26. This construction will be a replica of the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers, scaled to 19 feet. Although the towers will stand 7 feet shorter than the 2022 double world record-breaking Willis Tower construction, they will use nearly 20,000 more blocks than the 74,019 used in 2022. Construction will begin on Saturday, August 26 and go daily through the following week, with completion set for Labor Day, Monday, September 4, in a culminating event for the community. Building will take place during the ASC business hours on the weekends, but only during the afternoon/evening hours on Monday through Friday.

Support for Guam’s First Responders and Military – The Tower for Humanity project, with its 9/11 theme, seeks to show support for and bring recognition to Guam’s First Responders and Military. Static displays, with information and brochures detailing the work of our first responders, will be present at the ASC Center Court during this event. Additional information will be available for those who may be interested in jobs and careers with a variety of groups that will be present, including the Guam Police Department, the Guam Fire Department and the Guam National Guard. Members of these groups will be present, onsite at the ASC on Labor Day, Monday, September 4.

Community Food Drive and Guam’s First Canstruction Competition – The Aydlett Brothers also seek to bring the island together in a culminating event to benefit children in need on Guam. Tower for Humanity has partnered with Be Heartfelt, a non-profit charity serving kids and youth in Guam. Be Heartfelt exists to focus on breaking the cycle of poverty by loving, teaching and serving. It does this through home visits, life skill teaching, shoes for school age children, a Meal Pack Program, and Hygiene Kits.

Be Heartfelt is seeking organizations, business, and offices to join in an island-wide Food Drive between 15 August and 4 September, and to participate in the island’s first-ever CANstruction Competition, set to be held on Labor Day, Monday, September 4.

Be Heartfelt has a Meal Pack Program that feeds 150 kids weekly. For the past year and a half, its meal packs have been provided discreetly every Friday at schools, filled with kid-friendly nonperishable food that provides two breakfasts, lunches, and snacks for the weekend. Through these efforts, Be Heartfelt seeks to minimize the effects of food insecurity on these children that include more frequent illness and delayed cognitive development, resulting in poor educational outcomes. The Meal Pack Program aims to improve the community’s health and economic vitality. Be Heartfelt works with school social workers and their teams to carry out these goals.

Since nonperishable canned food items are key to the Meal Pack Program, Be Heartfelt is joining the Aydlett Brothers, to build upon the 2022 record-breaking Tower for Humanity project and to hold the island’s first-ever Canstruction Competition and Food Drive.

The Canstruction Competition will take place in the ASC as part of the culminating events when the final blocks of the Twin Towers are laid in place on September 4. Participating organizations will form teams of 6 to build structures with the canned goods they have collected during their food drive. Delivery and set up will take place on Sunday afternoon, September 3, with Canstruction taking place on Monday, September 4. The competition will end at 6:00 PM that evening with prizes awarded by a team of judges to the organization with the most food collected, and the team with the best structure.

To participate in the Food Drive and Canstruction Competition, please contact Lori Marble for details and to get placed on the competition list. Food Drive drop boxes will be available, by request, for your organization. Drop Boxes for donations will also be available onsite at the Tower for Humanity in the ASC Center Court during tower construction from August 26 to September 4. For a full list of non-perishable food items to donate, please see the list below. Hygiene Kits are also welcome.
