Rota Mayor’s Office to conduct daily cleanups

IT is not just during the Islandwide Coastal Cleanup on Earth Day that the Rota Mayor’s Office will clean up the island, according to Mayor Aubry Hocog.

In an interview, Hocog said she has already identified various places on Rota that will be cleaned up by her office staff.

“We all can contribute to the cleanliness of our island,” she added.

Rota is participating in the Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality’s Islandwide Coastal Cleanup on April 21 and 22, but Hocog said maintaining cleanliness is an everyday task that each member of the community should perform.

She said her personnel are also going around the island to educate community members regarding proper waste disposal.

“I want to encourage our residents not to litter and to properly dispose of their trash. When disposing of your garbage in the landfill, make sure to cover and secure it so the trash will not fly away,” she said.

Her office is also working on installing trash bins and signs in public areas frequented by tourists and residents, including children.

“By these we are teaching our kids at an early age how to properly dispose [of] trash. We should have a sense of responsibility in making sure that our island is clean and beautiful…and a place we can be proud of,” she said.

“In this community, we are all responsible,” the mayor added.
