AS the holiday frenzy reaches its peak, it can be difficult for adults to find the childlike hope and joy that animated past Christmas seasons. But for Saipan Humane Society leaders Lauren Cabrera and Ruby Ma, the chaos has clarified the real reason for the season: caring and providing for others. Through establishing spay/neuter clinics and supplying other much-needed veterinary services on Saipan, Lauren and Ruby help both animals and their owners feel the warmth, comfort, and community that embody the holiday spirit all year round.
By dedicating themselves to the simple act of caring for our furry friends and neighbors, they allow overscheduled, overwhelmed adults to rediscover the essence of Christmas. Lauren and Ruby’s devotion represents what the holidays are truly about: spreading compassion and togetherness by lifting up those most in need of help or bringing people together. Their work is a reminder that the spark that makes this season special isn’t found in wrapping paper, but rather in simple acts of service given from the goodness of one’s heart.
Lauren Cabrera
Growing up in wintry New Hampshire, Lauren’s Christmases were filled with icy adventures picking out trees and cozying up to hot cocoa by the fireplace after playing in the snow. She fondly recalls how her family made precious time to bundle up together amidst their busy schedules. “Everybody took time from their busy lives to spend the holiday season together and enjoy the simpler things in life.”
Though Lauren now celebrates Christmas on sunny Saipan through her marriage to a local son of the island, she prioritizes carrying on special traditions across the miles and years. “The weather is different, but the values are the same,” she says. “We make a point of taking time from our busy lives to connect as a family and enjoy the simpler things.”
In a season often overwhelmed by crowded shopping malls, hectic travel plans, and endless obligatory parties, Lauren offers wisdom for grounding ourselves in what matters. “Start each day with gratitude for who and what you have in your life. The rest of your day cannot go wrong!” By pausing to appreciate our blessings, she believes we realign to the essence of the holidays, which has little to do with gifts or events.
Lauren models savoring connection and simplicity amidst the frenzy, much like she fosters compassion and care year-round through her nonprofit work. Her holiday reflections are a heartening reminder that the Christmas spirit is not about what we do – it’s who we’re with in those little moments along the way that truly leaves a lasting mark.

Ruby Ma
Growing up in the vibrant city of Hong Kong, Ruby Ma’s childhood memories of the holiday season are woven with a unique blend of Western and Asian traditions. The festive atmosphere that enveloped the city, with its colorful decorations and sparkling lights adorning the streets, created a magical ambiance that left a lasting imprint on Ruby’s heart.
Reflecting on her favorite childhood memories, Ruby recalls the enchanting experience of visiting Victoria Harbour to witness the stunning Christmas light displays against the iconic city skyline. The juxtaposition of the modern cityscape with the traditional elements of Christmas always felt special to her. The blend of cultures and the festive spirit in Hong Kong created a unique and memorable holiday experience for Ruby.
When asked about the advice she can offer to adults about focusing less on material aspects and more on the true essence of the season, Ruby emphasizes the importance of embracing Saipan’s traditions. She encourages adults to connect with nature through outdoor activities, participate in community events, create new island-themed traditions, and prioritize quality time with loved ones over material gifts.
“Shift the focus from material aspects by embracing Saipan’s traditions,” Ruby suggests. “Connect with the natural beauty of the island through outdoor activities and immerse yourself in the community events that capture the true essence of the season. Create new traditions that reflect the unique spirit of the island, and most importantly, prioritize quality time with loved ones over material gifts.”
In a season often dominated by crowded shopping malls and hectic schedules, Ruby’s advice serves as a reminder to rediscover the joy and warmth that come from meaningful connections and shared experiences. By embracing the traditions of Saipan and fostering a sense of community, individuals can shift their focus away from the commercial aspects of the holidays and rediscover the true heart of Christmas.
