7 pairs score men, women’s titles at Tan Holdings Classic

Bobby Cruz and Lope Padilla clinched first place in the men’s 5.0 doubles event, beating Todd Montgomery and Roy Pangelinan via default.

“It’s too bad that Todd couldn’t make it to our game,” said Cruz, who sought revenge since losing to Montgomery last week Sunday’s men’s singles championship.

The Cruz-Padilla duo survived the semifinals on Friday, crushing Tommy Choi and Amami Sakano in two sets, 6-4, 6-1. Pangelinan and Montgomery advanced to the finals on a 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 win over Jeff Belzer and teen netter Rafael Jones.

Dodong Lacbayo and Rich Asuncion clinched the men’s 4.0 doubles title against John Kang and Ryan Cho (3-6, 6-2, 6-4).

Lacbayo and Asuncion defeated Carl and Darnel Dela Cruz, 6-4, 6-1 in Saturday’s semis and Imaya Kentaro and Gabriele Colombo, 6-1, 6-2 in Friday’s quarterfinals.

Kang and Cho reached the finals after ending Fernando Cajigan and Reo Arriola in three sets (6-4, 3-6, 7-6).

In the men’s 3.0 doubles event, James Libut and Ernie Henzon squeezed out a 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory over Isagani Cortes and Don Castillo. Libut and Henzon went unbeaten after crushing Noel Biglete and Diony Peralta (6-1, 6-3) and Primo Po and Michael Park (6-1, 6-1).

Pangelinan dominated the men’s 40-and-above doubles event with Boyet Minor, beating Kalen Feel and Lacbayo, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. Pangelinan and Minor secured their finals seat on a 6-3, 6-4 win over George Poquiz and Abe Malae last Friday.

The men’s 40A division included four pairs and — like the other men’s events — was played in a single elimination format.

Meanwhile, Theecel and Joy Minor topped the round-robin women’s 4.0 doubles event. Lydia Tan and Sally Lee, who won one of their two games, settled for second place.

The women’s 3.0 doubles category, comprised of five pairs, was ruled by Cheiko Nagao and Sadako Arriola. The champions completed three sets to sweep Keiko Ojima and Ayumi Kaga, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in Sunday’s finals at Hyatt Regency Saipan.

Tan and Lee bagged the women’s 40A doubles title against Cleofe Santos and Joy Minor (7-5, 6-3).
