“Forever Young” – How one unstoppable silver squad Zumba’d their way to health

Five days a week, 82-year-old Rosa “Atcha Bebe” Palacios joins an impressively energetic group of middle-aged and elderly Zumba devotees. Led by their passionate instructor Zin Joseph Caranto, this uplifting intergenerational squad boasts nearly 30 dedicated members ranging from ages 40 to 85 years young.

Longtime dancers Lyn Reyes, Mila Pellegrino, Marie Babauta, Mary Lee Tarroza, Bhiya Canadalla, Ruby Guzon, Gemma Caranto, Flordeliza Reymundo, Dhorie Dela Cruz, Len Angelo, Arman Amog and the group’s most senior member 85-year-old Guadalupe Sabino gather each weekday afternoon to salsa, merengue and samba their cares away.

The Latin-inspired dance fitness class is the highlight of their day – a judgement-free zone focused on maintaining health and chasing happiness through fitness and lasting friendships. Hoots, hollers and laughter can be heard as the “Let’s Move Marianas (Biba Active)” crew confidently strut their stuff.

Beads of sweat glisten as they joyfully tap their feet and pump their arms with impressive gusto belying their mature age. Smiles and encouragement abound in this collaborative community.

What began as a regular exercise session in 1985 has blossomed into an empowering outlet where members credit their continued participation for everything from weight loss, injury recovery and youthful energy to decreased anxiety, sharpened cognition and an enhanced zest for life. As the wise Guadalupe reminds the group after each invigorating session: “Keep moving!”
