Cyclists test strengths at SDA race

Tenorio posted two hours, five minutes, and 33 seconds to top the men’s open road bike division in the Seventh-day Adventist School Thanksgiving Race. The prospective HOM participant joined the 60-kilometer course, which stretched to the airport, Chalan Talofofo, Kingfisher Golf Links, and radar station in As Matuis.

Tenorio separated from the pack at the Kingfisher area and enjoyed a solo finish.

“I used this race as a time trial for myself now that the HOM is coming up,” he said in a satisfied tone after reaching the finish line located near SDA School.

Second-ranked Ariel Garcia (2:12:47) arrived seven minutes later with Nap Dizon, who ruled the 60-km men’s open mountain bike division. Aldrin Sta. Ana trailed Garcia at 2:20:50.

Sunday’s winners included Willy Barbo, who had 2:22:09 to top the road bike category’s 47-and-above age group. Cesar Fortaleza and Philip Ganang timed in at 2:22:51 and 2:32:05, respectively to reach the men’s top three.

Andy Nutting posted 2:26:01 in the men’s 45U-road bike category, followed by Danny Garcia (2:51:44) and Ben Babauta (3:06:43).

In the women’s open division, Mieko Carey completed her first local race since returning from the XTERRA World Championship in Hawaii. The pro triathlete ranked first at 2:17:26, followed by Heather Kennedy (3:08:09).

The women’s mountain bike category’s top three comprised of Joann Salazar, Susan Marchitti, and Juanita Fajardo.

Tailing Dizon in the men’s mountain bike division were Charlie Sendin (2:20:54) and Bob Ferrer (2:22:09). Under the same category, Gary Bandoja was crowned as the 46A division’s champion with 2:21:43. Ariel Lansangan (2:52:37) settled for second place while Noel Ignacio (2:54:11) ranked third.

In the 45U division, Ronald Lanuza ranked first with 2:26:53. Ricky Melchor (2:28:55) and Erico Castro (2:31:32) placed second and third.

The 30-km course, which didn’t cross the Kingfisher area and radar station, had the following winners:

-Men’s 45U Mountain Bike Division:

Ken Pierson (first-1:14:39), Enrique Suba (second-1:14:51), and Nelson Pogpduon (third-1:14:59)

-Men’s 45A Mountain Bike Division:

Diony Peraeta (first-1:15:08), Ruben Leynes (second-1:19:49), and Rolly Verzon (third-1:22:41)

-Women’s Mountain Bike Division

Regina Sebial (first-1:28:25), Angie Mister (second-1:31:01), and Jodel Fernandez (third-1:37:29).

Kaisei Toda, who posted 1:16:10, was the 30-km course’s sole road biker.

Two weeks away, the grueling 100-km Hell of the Marianas race is set for December 3.
