Berks Blazers shoot to top 3; Saipan BC still ahead

The Berks Blazers — who sat in the bottom of last week’s rankings — now stand with 63 sets, below Golden Racquet Badminton Club (66 sets).

Shirley’s BC remained in fourth place at 61 sets while Taga BC plummeted to fifth place with 55.

Saipan BC leads the pack with 85 sets — just enough to last them through this coming weekend’s final match-ups.

Both the Berks Blazers and SBC claimed three games each after clashing in singles and doubles matches on Sunday.

SBC’s Joel Ortega and Kim Boranah drew the first win against Rommel Bartolome and Jane Tupaz (23-21, 18-21, 21-16), while Gary Bondoja and Heo In Sook crushed Saul Gargallo and Lot Abuel in two sets (21-12, 21-16).

The Berks Blazers fired back on a doubles victory from Ferdie Arago and Annette Quiambao, who routed Hannah Choi and Mario Diola, 21-18, 17-21, 21-19.

Macoi Aguda trumped SBC’s Dick Guintu, 21-17, 21-19 in a singles showdown.

Lani Bartolome and Marlene Peraja marked the Blazer’s last win on a three-set game versus Sunja and Toshiko Obata (13-21, 21-18, 21-15).

Choi posted a 21-11, 21-11 singles win against Lucille Lampera.

In a Taga-Shirley’s face-off, partners Luis Camacho and Elna Curate conquered Jexler and Barlao in two sets (21-11, 21-17). Shirley’s BC’s Gerry Hibi and Annette Ta followed with a doubles win over Angie Ito and Rodwealth Espana.

Ito redeemed herself on a 21-14, 21-15 victory from Malou Malasarte while Andrew Galvez crushed Hapi Gabriel, 21-19, 21-17.

Semifinals in the men and women’s class A, B, and C divisions will start this Friday. Consolation and championship games commence on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Remaining match-ups between the Golden Racquet BC and Berks Blazers also take place this weekend.
